Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

Now it's doing it again. I get the following message:

The file could not be accessed. Try one of the following:

Make sure the specified folder exists.
Make sure the folder that contains the file is not read-only.
Make sure the file name does not contain any of the following characters:
< > ? [ ] : | or *.
Make sure the file/path name doesn't contain more than 218 characters.

When I hit OK then the next message says:

Invalid Web Query

This happened after I had been using the other versions for awhile. I used each of them a lot and then they had trouble finding the data for some of the cells. I can still use it but some of the cells don't work and I have to enter the data manually. Last time I waited a few days and then it started to work, again.

All the complaints and whining would motivate me to get my pen and paper back out! Mickey.

I'm not Mickey, I'm Bob Cratchit! It's weird. I had looked at maybe 30 companies with the spreadsheet, yesterday, when it suddenly stopped working. I think maybe my ISP is blocking it. I'll try it tomorrow when I get to work. Maybe it will work there. I have all these great companies that you all have suggested to catch up on! If I get my pen and paper out, I could get maybe two done before bed time. If I get the spreadsheet running, I could get 10-12 done.

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

Eureka! I figured it out! I have Verizon DSL and it has been speeding up and slowing down. The spreadsheet only works when the connection is fast. When anything slows down the connection, then the spreadsheet burps, coughs, and sputters on some of the cells. That's when the errors come. My son just got a call from his girlfriend and stopped playing his favorite MMO game on the other computer to talk to her. The connection sped up as a result and viola! the spreadsheet worked fine. So all of you fine people who were losing sleep because of my plight can breathe a sigh of relief (lol). Hope this helps someone else.

Ok, I have one question. I considered myself a pretty well versed Excel geek until I downloaded your spreadsheet. Now I know I was wrong. Can you tell me how you get the spreadsheet to pull down the numbers from MSN by just entering in a Symbol then clicking enter? I have tried to find the mysterious formula but I can't. I wouod like to use this funstion in the future. I love using the Spreadsheet. It has saved me plenty of time.

LOL, yeah, I thought I was pretty good at Excel also. A couple of issues could be stopping you. I tried this on one of my comps with Office 97 and it would not work. But it DOES work on my comp with Office 2000 XP Pro. So, you need a newer version of Office, however, I'm not sure of exact versions that work (or don't).

Before any version will work, you'll need the Excel plugin:

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

Wow, You see and I thought I was crazy. So, If I install this plugin, it will give me the oppurtunity to use this function that allows me to create a cell that pulls down information form the MSN site?
