Arrrrgh.
Hey Pete. How would Col N look after this change? Other than this.
Cell N48: 5
Cell N49: 4
Cell N50: 3
Cell N51: 2
Cell N52: 1
Cell N53: 5
Cell N54: 4
Cell N55: 3
Cell N56: 2
Cell N57: 1

You have to spell things out for me. I changed my spreadsheet to reflect all the other Free Cash flow changes. looked good. I think we can look a free Cash flow more accurately, yearly. Thanks for the fix.

Another question. How do you look at Debt?

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

I got the spreadsheet to work, but how do I use it ?

Is there a manual that tells me how to use and how to read the spreadsheet ?

Thanks in advance.

The UserNotes worksheet contains several links, one of which is to a tutorial. The tutorial was written for an older version of the sheet, but you should get the idea. Browsing through the entire thread can't hurt. Of course, you should have read the book. I find the spreadsheet to be just about a perfect blueprint for the formulae in the book.

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

Pete, I love the spreadsheet too. I would also love to see a Graham-type spreadsheet that included market cap, earnings stability, P/B, Current Ratio, dividend record, and Net Assets/Debt. If you use these criteria in addition to the growth criteria Phil uses to calculate intrinsic worth, you end up with companies trading at prices closer to their book value that also are growing steadily. Graham seems to prefer steady growth to rapid growth and favors companies that are fastidious about their financial condition, particularly with regard to debt and ratio of current assets to current liabilities.

I've read the book Best investment book ever !

I have looked through the tutorial, and it's more clear to me now.

But I still don't understand why the MOS price sometimes is red (negative) ?

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

True to the book, the spreadsheet takes the most conservative path. It calculates the MOS by projecting growth rates for EPS. But if either EPS or PE is negative, that is what is used, resulting in a negative Sticker Price and a negative MOS. This usually happens if the company had negative earnings in one or more years.

But if you think the result is a bit too draconian (e.g., you think the negative earnings were an abberation and the company has turned things around), you can plug in alternative numbers (growth rate, earnings & PE) into the cells headed Scenario #2 (Rows 2-4 only) and work with that. I think Scenario #2 is about the greatest thing Justin put into the sheet. I use it a lot. I liked the book (after all, I am using this stuff), but, for me, it's just one of a couple of methods I use to calculate the intrinsic value of a stock.

If you know Excel fairly well, examine the formulas in some of the cells to see how they work. Or you can go to Phil Town's web site and use his calculator (I prefer the spreadsheet, because it's NOT a black box -- I know how the numbers are derived by looking at the formulae).

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

I keep reminding myself NOT to save the spreadsheet when I'm finished using it, but, invariably, I'll save it, usually just after entering a stock with incomplete information. Sometimes, this corrupts some of the formulas in the MAIN worksheet.

If you don't know your way around spreadsheets all that well, here's a suggestion:

On the Main worksheet, SELECT Cells A1 - P67.
From the MAIN menu, Format -> Cells -> Protection Tab
Click 'Locked', then OK
Now, select Cells D1 and L2-L4
From the MAIN menu, Format -> Cells -> Protection Tab
Click 'Locked' off, then OK
From the MAIN menu, Tools -> Protection -> Protect Sheet -> OK

What this does is protect the entire worksheet from getting stepped on,
except for the 4 cells intended for data entry (D1 and L2, L3 and L4).

Since I've gotten pretty familiar with the entire spreadsheet, I have also elected to hide all of the worksheets except for UserNotes and Main.

Try it. It works well for me. I haven't screwed anything up in days....

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

I haven't check this site in a while (been moving). The last mos sheet I have is "auto_msn303a". I updated it and all fields went blank. I downloaded the new sheet but how can I keep my eye on a whole list of companies like the other sheet did? Thanks, sca
