Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

Looks like a nice tool, but I'm having trouble using it. What version of Excel is this for? Would it work in Open Office?

I followed the link to the tutorial from the User Notes tab, but it seems to be a troubleshooting page.

Are you just supposed to enter the stock symbol near the top of the Main tab and the tool should retrieve all of the data?

When I open the spreadsheet it has CTSH as the symbol and all of the date is filled out. If I delete the symbol or input a new one nothing else changes, all of the original numbers as well as the company description stay the same.

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

You need a version of Excel which has Web Query capability. I believe this includes all versions after Windows95. I use Excel 2000, e.g. I believe the version released in 1997 also handles web queries.

I briefly tried running Justin's spreadsheet on the Open Office spreadsheet program, but wasn't too successful.

Your favorite online auction website often has older copies of Excel (and MS Office) at very reasonable prices. I got Excel 2000 for about $30 (standalone Excel, not packaged with Office), but I'm extremely, er, frugal.

I like the automatice MOS spreadsheet. Thanks for putting it together, very nice. My question is where do I find information on stochastics, MA, MACD? Thanks! Pete

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

MACD
Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) - StockCharts.com

Stochastics
Stochastic Oscillator (Fast, Slow, and Full) - StockCharts.com

Moving Averages
Moving Averages - StockCharts.com

Moving Averages are occasionally useful -- as far as I'm concerned, the longer the better. For me, the best use of MAs is when a stock price wanders far above or below an MA; return to the mean is sometimes at hand.

Stochastic tells you whether a stock is overbought or oversold. Problem is that they can stay overbought or oversold for a LOOOOONNNNGGGG time.

MACD - I remember when Appel came out with this. Neat idea. But over the years, I have found it to be just about perfectly useless.

These indicators have NO predictive value. They merely indicate where a stock price has been. Do yourself a favor -- don't spend much time with this stuff. Wrap your brain around a company's annual report instead.

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

Justin,

Tanks for all your work with the site and the spreadsheet!!!

Would it be possible for you to include in percentage format the current stock price verses the sticker price. I think it would be easier to then compare different companies when doing our research. In other words at what percentage off sticker price is th stock trading at……….

Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

Another member found a minor bug regarding the labeling of the cell Analyst Estimated Equity Growth Rate -- the cell should actually be called Analyst EPS Growth Rate. The number being extracted was correct, just a bug with the labeling. Thanks Rob!

I've also made a few minor adjustments to the placement of the a few tables on the main tab. Things should be a little easier to read when the page gets busy.

You can read more about the update here.

The latest version can be downloaded in the first post of this thread. Let me know if you find any more kinks to work out!

Thanks folks,

Justin

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

Hello

When I try to enter a new ticker in Excel, it gives me the result that you see in the attached screenshot:

Somehow only some of the data makes it to the Excel, i.e. the company description - but some of the numbers are not inserted into the cells, and for this reason the MOS price cannot be calculated.

Hope that you can help

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

This is kind of off the path but perhaps someone out there can give me some direction I tried to down load the automatic MOS calculator but I keep getting a message that reads mos_calc 106.xls is not a valid Win32 application I'm sure it has something to do with my computer but I'm not sure what to do. Thanks Doug

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money

I've run into that rpoblem before as well. When you get the not valid win32 application means that the whole file did not download. If you are using wireless connection hook your computer up with a cable and try again. that error means that parts of the file didn't download.
Hope this helps
