Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money
I am running Windows XP Pro, Excel 2003 and get the "#DIV/0!" when I input WAG (Walgreens) and NOC (Northrop Grumman Corp.). I get a lot of 0's on other inputs, such as no MOS price.

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money
Same results here: #DIV/0. For some reason, the cells that hold the 10-yr Max PE and Low PE will not populate (I think they're G45 or something). If I go in and manually plug in the Max and Min PE's, the spredsheet works fine.
I'm running Windows XP, Excel 2002 and the stock I'm calculating is HLX. Hope this helps track down the problem. Hiram |

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money
This MOS calculator seems to be ultra conservative. If there are extremes on the PE, I would average out the PE as I think Phil suggested. It makes a big difference on the MOS. Thanks for the calculator, it does help confirm the MOS on most occasions.
on page 156, it says "(my best guess upon looking at this chart and seeing a high of 35.3 and a low of 12.1), we'd use 23 for the future PE, not 48." on page 157, "and we get our "Rule #1 PEs" by picking the lower of either the historical PE or the default PE." on page 158, "The Rule # PE is just the lower of the default PE or the historical PE." |

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator -error workaround
After much playing with the automatic calculator, i thought i would take a look and see if i could see how it works.
To resolve the following 2 errors:- (1). #DIV/O! error for Historical P/E Simply enter the 5 Year PE High in G45 and the 5 Year Low in G46 (Just go to a financial website, like Free stock prices, quotes, stock charts, market news and streaming real-time stock quotes. - click on Financials - enter ticker symbol - scroll down to see the 5 Year PE and Low figures. The spreadsheet with work out the Historical P/E (2) Blank Equity Growth Rate Go down to cell B15 and overtype the number already in there, and repeat in all cells to k15. ie, if the cell says '$5.68', then just overtype and type in '5.68' (dont put in $ symbol). It works for me!! This obviously is a workaround and not a fix. I can only imagine that Excel doesnt treat those cells as numbers, but as text? Eitherway, i get to see the Growth rates i need to see. Hope it helps ![]() |

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money
Justin,
Thanks for a great resource. I do have a couple of questions: 1) the Free Cash Flow raw data from MorningStar does not look correct. In looking at the query and the actual webpage you are pulling from, you are not getting the actual FCF at the bottom of the Morningstar table. Looking at the raw data on the xls tab, you are only getting "cash from investing" which is a negative number. 2) On the "-Main-" tab, in the growth % table, you lable the far right column as "TTM" but looking at the calculations, they are actually the full Fiscal 1Yr numbers...which is the right answer, just not labled correctly. To get TTM, it seems to me that you would have to do a complex query to get the last x fiscal quarters of data from the previous FY and the current FY and then do the growth calculation over y periods (FQ, or Months). Again, It is much better than my initial effort in Excel and I appreciate you putting it together. Thanks AustinA6 |

Dear Justin,
Great Job! I have been trying to find such a spreadsheet for a while. I am getting an error problem in getting to the web. I can go to the "Discussion" website on the User Notes, but cannot get to the tutorial and other websites. Can you help? Thanks Paul |

Re: Margin of Safety Calculator for MSN Money
Hello all
I was wondering if anyone else was having problems with the latest MOS calculator. I get an error (I believe from the quote page data) saying the following: The file could not be accessed. Try one of the following: * Make sure the specified folder exists * Make sure the folder that contains the file is not read only. * Make sure the file name does not contain any of the following characters: < > ? [ ] : | or * * Make sure the file/path name doesn't contain more than 218 characters. This is only a recent event as it was working fine initially. I have also downloaded the file several time just to make sure it was not corrupt. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks Adam |
