Strength in Numbers & Mentors

Hello Everyone,

I'd say I'm already a successful investor but with conservative investments. I recently heard about #1 Rule and am up for applying myself to give it a good try. I know that knowledge is power and there's a lot to be gained from past performance and finding similarities in thinking shared among successful people.

Regarding, Phil Town, Warren Buffett and Ben Graham, do any of you know of a comparative table of chart that lists the individual points to their investment philosophys/systems in a side by side comparison to show where they think alike or differently on different issues/strategies/priorities?

Many thanks,
RLFfin

Re: Strength in Numbers & Mentors

Impossible to do in my opinion! Like horse race handicapping there are several ways to skin a cat to come up with the winner in a race.

The bottom line with the type of investing we all would like to do is VALUE INVESTING. That is what Town, Buffett & Graham are all about!

Only (2) things we need to know/do. What's it worth?(intrinsic value) and don't lose money! (MOS). That priciple has worked without question since 1934, in every type of market. Its not brain surgery and anyone can do it!

Re: Strength in Numbers & Mentors

I have to contradict here. Town is NOT VALUE INVESTING.

Buffet moved away from Grahams cigar-butt approach years ago and concentrates more on the intangibles of a business.

However, the concept of a margin of safety remains with all three of them, but the way the business is evaluated is SUBSTANTIALLY different between Town or Graham/Buffet.

Thumbs up Greetings and salutations!

I listened to the book on audio CD twice then ended up buying the book as well, back in February. Since then my Rule 1 picks have been going up, up, UP. See WIRE, GRP, CRDN, DIOD... and the list goes on.

I don't subscribe to pure Rule 1 analysis anymore, having done a lot more reading afterward. There are other items / numbers out there that can be rather important to take into account as well. I do however believe Rule 1's premise is an extremely sound base from which to begin your research. Too bad it takes sooooo long to run all the numbers!

Hello and welcome to the community!

Just wanted to pass along the link to the Excel Spreadsheet that helps with running the numbers. You can downloaded it here: http://www.roicommunity.com/forum/automatic-margin-safety-calculators/1186-margin-safety-calculator-msn-money.html

See ya round
