What did you buy today?

I'd like to see if we could get some contributors to this, in my deepest announcer voice.......ahem.......

WHAT DID YOU BUY TODAY!

April 4, 2008

Agnico-Eagle (AEM)

Catalyst - This is a play on the job numbers today, and gold was up almost $4 to $913.20 an ounce.

Re: What did you buy today?

SOLF on Friday @ $15.43.

Pure technical play. I love the current trend & very interesting (big boy) vol. action.

ESLR @ $10.62. Ditto to above.

Take a serious look at this sector. Many of these got killed in the 1st quarter. There appears to be some real bargains, with lots of upside.

This is a hot sector and is for the trader vs. the long term investor. Keep your stops tight and watch a short term SMA. Keep an eye on resistance levels and sideways action. These may get choppy. Look for runs up on the short term for both. That is why I am in.

Best of investing.

Re: What did you buy today?

Gun, those are both good looking plays.

Last week at various times I loaded up (paper account). Here's what I bought:

BIDU
CALM
CHL
EBAY
JASO
NE
RIMM

I'm already holding:
AAPL
PNRA
WMT

These were all purchased on technical criteria - mainly trendlines and breaking into 20-day highs.

Re: What did you buy today?

Thank you Tom. We'll see on to solar business. They are very interesting.

I really like your list as well. I have owned CALM in the past. Neat business. I was concerned about feed prices and the effect on the egg market. Trickle down effect, just like everything these days.

Re: What did you buy today?

I hope some people took some time to take a serious look at SOLF & ESLR. Both moving nicely this morning, with nice confirmation (follow through) of their previous moves. Plus, they just retraced, to fill yesterdays gap up (using a 10 minute chart). That is very positive.

SOLF forming a nice W-A pattern (10 minute chart.) This is postive too. Look for a move up once the A is formed.

Best of investing.

Re: What did you buy today?

Since 4/5/08 "What Did You Buy Today?"

Then SOLF $15.43. Now $15.70.
Then ESLR $10.62. Now $11.37.

Keep tight stops as earnings reports are right around the corner. Always lock in a profit! "Never lose money".

Tom - can you go through your current analysis of PNRA? Just listened to their F4Q07 earnings call and they reset their eps growth for the near term to 12-18% due to their reducing the number of store openings in '08 to focus on margins. They also stated that increasing wheat prices are giving them a run for their money.

I think it's a good company and they were very up-front and realistic in their earnings call, but my calcs are the following:

P/E: 28
EPS growth: 14 (conservative side of 12-18%)
Current EPS: $1.79
Future EPS: $6.89
Sticker price: $48
MOS price: $24

I understand that having already established a position you wouldn't sell until you got a tools signal - but do you agree/disagree with my current evaluation given their revised statements for FY2008?

Also, PNRA, currently has over 1,100 stores. At what point do you expect saturation to take effect, thus limiting long term growth?

Thanks!

Re: What did you buy today?

Looks like a great analysis to me. You seem to understand all of their problems - margin problems (cost of wheat), the fact that they can't grow their store count forever - at some point they need to grow same-store sales. The biggest problem for me is simply free cash flow. They just can't increase their bottom line even though earnings look pretty good.

As for why I'm in them right now (on paper trading) - it's strictly technical - and now it looks like the technicals might be again turning on them - MACD is looking ugly.

If you're looking at them for a fundamental analysis then beware - they definitely have to work out some problems.

Re: What did you buy today?

Gotcha, thanks for the confirmation, Tom!

I do like the very matter-of-fact approach of their management team, however. Their earnings call was very frank and pragmatic.

I'm looking at the charts for both of these. It appears that the time you got in was closer to the peak? Six month movement, stochtastic, MACD. How is your stop loss set up? Trailing or specific price? Two weeks ago you would have big gains with these two.
