Re: Rule # 1 list update anyone???

It was a Relative Strength, Top 100, selection from using the Barchart web site.

I looked at the top 20 out of the Top 100 Listing. I looked at the Weekly Chart, I liked the price close above the MA(50) with confirmation. I liked the direction of the 50(MA) & 150(MA). Looking at a Bollinger Band chart, it was coming out of constricted bands (Consolidation). I felt it was ready to break out of Stage 1.

I was in at $2.80 on 6/23/08, per my trading acct. records.

Tim Sykes does not like this stock. That made my decision easier to get in.

I used the charts on Scottrade.

Same type of thing for ATSI. In at $1.67 on Apr. 28, '08, coming out of consolidation (Stage 1), crossed and close aboved MA(50). Up and retrace, another buying opportunity. Then up and above MA(150) on July 7, 2008. This is the kind of action you want to see. Again using a Weekly Chart.

Hope that helps a little.

Re: Rule # 1 list update anyone???

Just wondering, how is everyone finding Rule # 1 stocks, now that the Automatic MOS calculator is Temporarily offline?? I guess I've been spoiled over the last year using that program and I forget how to do my homework without it! I read Phil Town's R#1 book obviously, and I try to practice the concepts in my trading, however I have never done the actual analysis the long way by hand I have always used the automatic mos calculator from this site... So is everyone doing their stock analysis long hand or am I missing out on something?? I would really appreciate your advice so I can analysis some new stocks.. After all I have a whole list of symbols I am trying to scan and then post for everyone's input..

Thanks - Solomon

You can use the MSN Deluxe Stock screener tool (or something like that) to scan the stock market on several criteria, which results in a list of possible #1 stocks. For the MOS calculation I use the excel tool from this site (no long hand work) but I always try to make a DCF/CCF valuation if I'm interested in buying a certain stock, for which I don't use any computer tools.

For (basic) technical analysis I use yahoo.

Re: Rule # 1 list update anyone???

Solomon,

I still hold a small position in HANS. I lean more towards value investing now as I don't know enough to invest mostly on TA. I guess I follow the limited TA that was in Phil's book but as most people on here will declare it will whip you around to much. Therefore, I think I will hang on for a bit longer and see what plays out with the stock. I like the company but they don't have any sort of moat so I'm cautious long term. "My" calculated MOS was around $21 a share.

You must know where to exit, to be a profitable investor! Don't hang around or wait to get whipsawed. Always take a profit. That way you'll always be a winner.

Have you checked out the trend on HANS? Nice bounce. Resistance @ $30.00. Can't break throught. But, check out a weekly bar chart using a simple MA(20) & MA(10) that bad boy is going down & will continue down.

Please click on chart to enlarge:

Re: Rule # 1 list update anyone???

I hear you Gunnski but I think it also depends on what strategy your following. Personally, I lean towards value investing because if you don't have the time to closely monitor your investments it puts you in danger. Also trades eat up profits through taxes and fees. Would I hang on to a sick or overvalued stock because of taxes or trading fees. Of course not but I don't have the expertise yet nor do I think I want to be an active trader. I guess I try to use a more hybrid approach to value investing with limited TA. So far it has worked for me and I hope it continues to. I guess I just don't see the point in selling a security due to a trend if the company hasn't changed in the short term. However, I'm in now way bashing TA as the trend has been lately on here. I'm well aware many people have made their fortunes through TA. I also respect your opinion as I have learned a lot from you and Tom on here as well as from the value guys that have been on here from the start of the forum so please keep the tips/advice coming.

I have a question though as I use stockcharts and my graph over a 3 month time frame shows the 10 and 30 da MA in a slightly upward trend. This obviously contradicts with the chart you showed me. If I can figure out how to post a picture of my chart I will.

Regards,

Dan

Danno,

It may be the chart set up. I posted a Weekly Chart, for HANS. You may be using a Daily or some other time frame. That will effect the MA's, price bars & the appearance of the chart sometimes.

Re: Rule # 1 list update anyone???

Thanks for all your guys input on HANS, I just ran the techs my slow stochatics chart is approaching sell, same with MACD, my 10 day MA already broke through.. I will just wait it out and see what the techs do before I decide to jump in again.. I have a feeling that HANS might be one of those R#1 stocks thats fairly volatile, but will give you the opportunity to jump in and out, to ride the waves up and not down.. We'll see though..

Also, what are your guys thoughts on the fundamentals of STLD?? Its tech's are still shaky, but what do you guys think about this company as a whole and well as the steel industry? Also do you think its debt load is too high?? Is your MOS for STLD $22.56/share???

GRMN - whats everyone's thoughts on this one fundamentally.. My old MOS figure reads $50.04 share is that current?

AOB- I have been watching this stock since January.. I almost got in, but I am glad I never did.. I always thought it had potential but for some reason it seems to do nothing.. Any thoughts?? about this company fundamtenally??

I appreciate all your input

- Solomon
