Re: Best Software Applications?

For a short while I was using MarketBrowser Pro, which was well worth the annual fee of $59. It is a simple desktop app and loads fast, but had some minor downsides in its technical analysis customization.

I'm pretty sure they still have a free version that is still highly functional and gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect in the full version. You can check that out here: http://www.marketbrowser.com

Re: Best Software Applications?

So, how much does it cost to join Investools? I didn't want to get wrapped into a long telephone sales pitch by calling the number.
Thanks in advance for a reply!
Katie

I believe the absolute minimum charge is (or at least was) $995. This price would give you 6 months access to the toolbox and a free workshop. The workshop covers a few basic stock concepts but is largely just a sales pitch for the more expensive packages.

Re: Best Software Applications?

I would go with the wonderful free tools that are available. Get a feel for things. Take some time then make a decision. I think those prices are way off the charts and lots of their features can be duplicated using other sites! For free or very low cost. DO NOT PAY UNREASONABLE FEES, to invest!

Re: Best Software Applications?

Thanks for the information. It's very helpful. I definitely like the word free! I am a complete and total novice...I should say infant...at Rule #1 investing at this point in the game, and thus, will take the advice of all to play around with the free stuff first...and hopefully, always! Thanks again. I welcome any suggestions on how to officially lanch my Rule #1 experience!

Re: Best Software Applications?

I'm new to Rule #1 and investing in general. I've been using E*Trade's research tools which I think are pretty good for just presenting raw info on a company. As I've figure out, however, the stock screening tool is very bad.

I've seen everyone's suggestion about using MSN finance as a free tool, but I'm having some trouble finding the site for the custom stock screener. MSN's page (Stock Screener: Stock Search - MSN Money) has a very general stock screener, but with only a few screening choices--NET PROFIT MARGIN {high/low as possible}. I'm not finding anything resembling a truly customizable stock screener that can handle even the relatively straight forward parameters of Rule #1.

I'm thinking I'm just not looking at the right page. So what I'm really looking for is a little charity for the newbie. Can anyone point me to the home page of the MSN stock screener?

Thanks,

Boone

Re: Best Software Applications?

Hi Boone,

Have you downloaded MSN Money INvestmentment Toolbox for the Deluxe Stock Screener or are you referring to other pre-fab screens on Moneycentral.MSN.com?

Re: Best Software Applications?

Boone,

First, make sure you are using MS Internet Explorer (IE). I wasn't and I did not see the custom stuff either; I was using Firefox. If you still don't see the custom search stuff when using IE, you can download the MSN Investment Toolbox from here, Screener -- Promotion - MSN Money.

Kevin
