smoothing

I have a question for any of you experts about smoothing. I use Scottrade online, and both the MACD and Stochastics include a smoothing function. According to Rule#1, the MACD smoothing should be set at 9 as part of Phil's preferred 8-17-9 parameters. But what about the Stochastics? I assume that one would want to have it synchronized with the MACD smoothing at 9 days, but then I'm new at this and so probably shouldn't assume anything. Please advise. Thanks in advace.
